Congregational Church Stays Connected
During the suspension of in-person activities in light of the Covid-19 situation, the Congregational Church of Amherst, UCC has a variety of ways for members and others to connect with church programs. This is especially important during April as Holy Week and Easter are on the horizon.
The most up-to-date information about church activities can be found on the church’s website (ccamherst.org) or by calling the church office at 673-3231. Sunday services are broadcast on FacebookLive and recorded for later on-line viewing. Services are followed by a Virtual Fellowship Hour. Links for these and other events can be found on the website.
The church’s Facebook page is another source of information, including updates and video messages from the pastors. Pastors Maureen Frescott and Kate Kennedy are available to provide pastoral care during this time, and the church welcomes community members to connect with this loving, serving, open and affirming community of faith.

OUR SUMMER PROGRAMS
There’s still time to register for the CHILDREN’S SUMMER READING PROGRAM.
This summer’s theme is Tails and Tales.
Children ages 3 through grade 6 are encouraged to come to the Children’s Room to pick up a“Summer Reading Kit”. Curbside pick-up is available, if you’re not comfortable coming into the building. Just call the Children’s Room, 673-2288 x751, ahead of time so that we can have your materials available for you to pick-up. Children will keep track of time spent reading using a fun Reading Log provided with their kit and earning small prizes along the way.
For older kids: The TEEN SUMMER READING PROGRAM is offered and registration is still available in the YA Area on the library’s main floor. Teens read and earn “book bucks” for every book read, which may be redeemed for books from the Friends’ Book Sale Shelves or used to enter a bi-weekly raffle. Also, we suggest Teens check-out our Teen’s Summer Reading Program 2021 page to reserve titles from the Souhegan Summer Reading List, as well as to explore some other fun activities.

ZOOM PET SHOW!
Be a part of this fun Amherst Town Library summer tradition!
Wednesday, July 14 at 2:00pm on ZOOM.
This year, the Amherst Town Library’s Annual Pet Show for Kids will be happening on ZOOM!
Sign-up to show us your pet, or sign up just to watch. For those who wish to show their pets, we will spotlight you so you and your pet are on the screen for everyone to see. We’ll ask you to introduce your pet, so you’ll need to have your pet with you, and we’ll ask you to tell us a few things about them. A poster or display prepped ahead of time is the best way to do this. For instance: What’s their name? What do they like to eat? What do they like to do? Do they have any special talents? You decide what to tell us...Be creative!
Kids showing their pets should be at least 5 years old or older.
Click to register to show your pet.
WANT TO WATCH: If you don’t have a pet, but would like to watch and join the FUN, register to receive the ZOOM link. Come be a member of the audience and share in this annual summertime Amherst tradition! All ages are welcome to join us! Click here to register.
OTHER FUN STUFF TO DO AT THE LIBRARY:
TAKE HOME CRAFT KITS for KIDS
Although we can’t set up the craft table at the library this summer quite yet, we are hoping to encourage your crafty creativity by offering some “craft kits” for take-home fun. Every Monday now through August 9, there will be a new craft kit to pick up downstairs just outside the elevator doors while supplies.
‘BOOKWALKS’
Look for the latest ‘Bookwalk’ on the library’s front lawn. Find the first page and follow the directions for a fun-filled walking treat, plus you’ll get to enjoy a story while being outside. ‘Bookwalks’ will change over the course of the summer and we’ll announce on our Facebook page when a new one is set-up. Time spent reading the latest BOOKWALK story counts as reading time and can be marked off on the children’s summer reading log!
PICTURE HUNTS
Children are invited to pick up a CHECKLIST from the container on the wall in front of the library and head around back to search for the pictures. **We ask that you please be respectful of the Garden Club’s Hard work by remaining on the slated path or grass while searching for pictures. All pictures can be located while on the path. We hope that you enjoy the challenge of the hunt in the peace of our beautiful garden area! Available even when the library is closed. Picture Hunts will change over the course of the summer and we’ll announce on our Facebook page when a new one becomes available.
"I Think My Mama Swallowed a Watermelon Seed"
Author Lori Thomas Hicks
Illustrator Carolyn Overholt Balogh
I Think My Mama Swallowed a Watermelon Seed is a whimsical and endearing story about one little boy’s perception of his mama’s growing belly. The light-hearted prose and charming illustrations found in this soon-to-be classic, gives the reader a glimpse into Evan’s three-year-old mind and how he processes the events around his expanding family. Could his mama have really swallowed a watermelon seed?
Available on Amazon in hardback, paperback and on Kindle. There also is a copy at the Amherst Library in the children’s room.
Carolyn was born in Newtown Square, PA (west of Philadelphia). Her family moved to Amherst, NH in 1980, where she attended Amherst Middle
School. Mr. Ron Reid, her art teacher, sent a note home to her family recommending extracurricular art lessons. She did that with Gail
Robinson, an artist who lived in Mont Vernon. After high school, Carolyn graduated from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia in 1993. She is the daughter of Liz Overholt and the late Bill Overholt.
As an artist and teacher, Carolyn revels in the exploits of adventure and the spirit of curiosity and learning. She particularly enjoys outdoor adventures on the beautiful central coast of California, and beyond; which fuel her imagination and ground her.
