New Hampshire’s Ski Area COVID Guidance Released

Governor Sununu announced COVID-19 Reopening Guidance for NH ski areas to be implemented statewide.

CONWAY—The Reopening Guidance for NH Ski Areas was released by the Office of Governor Sununu, and ski areas around the state are looking forward to continuing to develop their operating plans for this year around the guidance provided.

“The draft guidance that we submitted and presented to the Governor’s Reopening Task Force was put together with input and consensus across our ski area members. It’s been a real team effort and I’m very proud of the work that our re-opening committee and ski area members have been able to accomplish together,” said Jessyca Keeler, President of Ski New Hampshire. “The approved guidance takes the health and safety of our guests and staff seriously, and with additional input from the Department of Public Health, we’re confident that we have a guidance document that will lead us through this very different upcoming ski season.”

The COVID-19 Reopening Guidance for NH Ski Areas will be implemented statewide and includes guidance for staff and guests alike to wear face coverings inside buildings (except when eating or drinking); in lift lines and mazes as well as when loading, riding, and unloading from lifts; and in other places where 6 feet of physical distancing cannot be achieved.  Resorts will implement enhanced cleaning regimens, implement employee protocols (many of which have been in place since summer operations began), chairlift rides will only group families and those who have traveled together, ski areas will shift to more online ticket sales to avoid lines and in-person transactions at ticket windows, and there will be physical distancing requirements and capacity controls within lodges and other indoor facilities.  These adaptations and others will be common across the state’s ski areas and should provide a baseline of what guests should expect at any given area.

In addition to topics in the guidance that address ski-area specific operations such as chairlifts and lodges, other existing guidance is referenced that will be followed, including the NH Universal Guidance and guidance for the Food Service Industry, Child Care, Retail Stores, Amateur & Youth Sports, NH Performing Arts Venues, and various CDC guidance.

“NH ski area operators are used to stepping up and dealing with adversity and this year, for sure, it’s pronounced. With that said, we think we have a winning formula of guests that are super conscientious, a sport that is primarily based outdoors in the crisp mountain air, and some of the most thorough, well thought out plans—that deal with ski areas specifics—I have ever seen. I am genuinely giddy to get going with the ski season and I think it will be successful if everyone does their part,” said Kris Blomback, General Manager at Pat’s Peak Ski Area.

Resorts will be responsible for implementing operating plans designed to reduce the risk of infection from COVID-19. Guests will be responsible for following these procedures prior to and when they arrive at the ski area. Skier services will vary by resort as each area will decide which parts of its operation will be available to its guests. Guests should check the ski area’s website for the status of each ski area’s offerings and policies before arriving.

“These guidelines will help our guests to have the confidence to get out to ski and ride. Now’s the time to get pumped for the ski season—the rest is up to Mother Nature,” said Tom Day, Gunstock Mountain Resort president and general manager.

SHS XC Teams Ahead of the Pack

Anderson Leads Boys Team to Victory in Opener

Kariso Anderson led a young pack of runners from Souhegan to a convincing win over Campbell HS, 19-42, on Saturday, September 19 in the first meet of the season for both teams.  Anderson, only a sophomore, took it out strong and never looked back, finishing in an impressive 17:16 over the 5K course at the Buck Meadow Conservation and Recreation Area.   Junior, Nolan Dickinson, a much improved runner from a year ago, was unchallenged for second place with at time of 18:02.  Keegan Reynolds of Campbell, edged out Saber freshman Telisho Anderson (18:44, and 18:45 respectively) for 3rd place.   Another battle ensued for 5th place, with Souhegan’s Peter Headington outsprinting  Campbell’s Devin Lencki (19:01, and 19:02), with two more Sabers right on their heels (freshman, Owen Stine, 19:03, and sophomore, Jaren Noorda 19:04).   Sean Quinn completed the scoring for Souhegan with his 9th place finish in 19:18.

Trudel Leads Saber Girls to Victory

The Sabers Girls Cross Country Team displayed excellent early season form as they captured 7 of the top 8 spots to easily outdistance Campbell HS 18-45 in a dual meet on Saturday, September 19!  Chloe Trudel led from wire to wire as she traversed the course in a blazing 18:36, over the 5K fields and windy trails of the Buck Meadow Conservation and Recreation Area in Amherst.  Freshman standout Stephanie Svendsen captured 2nd place in her high school debut.  Campbell’s Megan Whitnell took 3rd place in 20:50, and was followed across the line by a trio of Saber sophomores with excellent times:  Amanda Uliciny (4th, 21:52), Audrey Littlefield (5th, 22:27), and Emma Jarnigan (6th, 22:28).  Molly Jennings (7th, 23:07) and Madeleine Glover (8th, 23:14) rounded out the scoring for the Sabers, with Riley Devine close behind (10th, 23:19).

Souhegan freshman, Stephanie Swendsen took the lead early and never looked back, enroute to her first place finish in 19:55, while Amanda Uliciny  steadily moved up over the course of the 5K race, eventually passing both Milford’s and Hollis-Brookline’s top runner, and making it a 1, 2 finish for Souhegan with her time of 21:37!   Abbey Halloran of Milford captured 3rd, followed by Amy Pattelena of Hollis-Brookline.  Emma Jarnigan then led a trio of Sabers across the line with her much improved time of 22:04. Souhegan’s Boys XC Team Races to Victory

The Sabers captured 6 of the top 9 places to easily outdistance Milford and Hollis-Brookline at a tri-meet in Amherst on Wednesday, September 23. While Milford senior Caleb Korthals took first place, the trio of Kariso Anderson (18:21), Nolan Dickinson (18:26), and Josh Goddard (18:26) finished within a 10 second span, and took 2nd, 3rd, and 4th respectively to lead the way for Souhegan. After a pair of Hollis-Brookline runners took 5th and 6th, the Sabers then brought 3 more runners across the line in a row.
