Arghavan Khosravi’s Potent Paintings Explore Oppression and Liberation

Currier Museum will present Khosravi’s first museum solo exhibition

MANCHESTER – The Currier Museum of Art is proud to present the work of Iranian painter Arghavan Khosravi in her first museum exhibition. The artist creates surrealist images that explore themes of exile, suppression, and empowerment.

Drawn from the artist’s memories, the enigmatic compositions center on women protagonists and allude to the restriction of human rights, particularly those of immigrants. Her work is partly autobiographical – a visual manifestation of her feelings as an Iranian woman artist now living in the United States. At the same time, the work is universal in its presentation of shared struggles and emotions.

Arghavan Khosravi will be on view from April 15 to September 5, 2022.

The exhibition features more than 20 works made over the last few years in a range of styles. In some, Khosravi uses printed textiles from Iran as canvas, weaving the patterns into compositions and subjects. In others, she experiments with three-dimensional components, building shaped wood panels that create optical illusions that augment the painted surfaces.

Khosravi draws on cross-cultural influences, from the symbol-laden statuary of ancient Western cultures to contemporary fashion magazines to the perspective of Persian miniature painting. “Arghavan Khosravi’s paintings are masterful in technique and draw the viewer in through richly detailed and stimulatingly symbolic compositions. Her work asks more than it answers, leaving room for the viewer to find themselves in her scenes,” says Samantha Cataldo, senior curator of contemporary art.

The exhibition opens on the evening of Thursday, April 14 during the Currier Museum’s free Art After Work event from 5 pm to 8 pm. The artist will be giving a public talk on Saturday, April 16 at 2 pm at the museum. More details are available at currier.org. An exhibition catalogue is being produced and will be available later this spring.

Amherst Town Library Art Exhibit Now Through April
Jan Merrill_edited.png

Jan Merrill

The Amherst Town Library would like to welcome Jan Merrill and her watercolors to the Amherst Town Library.  She will be exhibiting her beautiful, bold watercolors on the main floor of the library from mid March to the end of April.  There will be an artist reception on April 10 from 2-4pm on the main floor of the library where you can meet and greet Jan as you enjoy refreshments while exploring her work.  Stop by the library during regular business hours to

stroll through the art as you pick up a good read

Jan is a watercolor artist living in Amherst, New Hampshire. Her fascination with this medium started in grade school. Totally smitten by the brilliance and clarity of the colors, she painted on her own intermittently for years. Eventually realizing that more technical skills were needed to take her painting to another level, she discovered local artist Kevin Dadoly’s watercolor classes. During eight years of his tutelage, she acquired those skills, created numerous paintings and rekindled the love of watercolor. With this new technical and creative knowledge, she started painting more regularly, which led to an ever-increasing portfolio of nature-inspired artwork featuring leaves, birds, fruits, vegetables and flowers. Since the love of flowers has defined her entire life, it is no surprise that they figure most prominently in her choice of subject matter. Taking inspiration from personal photographs, she has captured the amazing detail and variety of plants and

individual blossoms, using a stylized form and vivid color. The resulting “portraits” are vibrant and unique, and offer the viewer a new way to see and enjoy the marvels of the natural world.

Head on down to the library through the end of April to see Jan’s work and pop in on Sunday April 10 between 2-4 to visit.  For more information about Jan’s work, visit her website at www.imagesfromtheheartnh.com to view her gallery of paintings, prints and notecards as well as commission information.  The exhibit and reception is open to the public during normal library hours.  If you are interested in exhibiting your work at the Amherst Town Library, contact Sharron at FOLartists@gmail.com for more information.
