(In-Person)

ATL 4-4-4-11_edited.jpg

MONDAYS, APRIL 4 & 11,  7:00 – 8:30 PM

Main Floor- Main Reading Room, Amherst Town Library

14 Main Street, Amherst, NH, 03031

This two part series (4/4 and 4/11) will explore the careers of the two most important and influential artists of the 20th century. One changed the way we look at the world through painting new shapes and forms; the other changed the intensity of how we feel about and engage with the world by exploiting the power of pure color. See it happen as these geniuses develop Fauvism, Cubism, Neo-Impressionism, Symbolism, Surrealism, and as they help other artists let go of representation and embrace abstraction. Matisse and Picasso were rivals, but respectful friends who inspired each other. Together they shaped Modern Art.

After many years of teaching classical languages, philosophy, and the history of ideas at Souhegan High School, presenter Nancy Baker now spends her time volunteering. She is immediate past Executive Chair of the Guild of Volunteers at the Currier Museum of Art and is an active docent there. Nancy gives talks on art, language and the history of ideas at the Currier, libraries, senior living enrichment programs, and community groups in the greater area. She is Chairman of the Amherst Library Board of Trustees and is an enthusiastic supporter of the role of the free library in communities.
