‘Going Forward: The Physical and Mental Health of Young Women’ will be the focus of the Southern NH Branch of the American Association of University Women’s last program in the series on Women’s Health Equity. It will be held at 7 pm on Wednesday, April 6, 2022 via Zoom. Two members of the professional staff at Souhegan High School are scheduled to discuss the topic. The program is free and open to all. Please contact Program Chair Johanna Tigert at johanna_tigert@uml.edu for the Zoom link.

Souhegan High School Social Worker Sheelu Joshi-Flegal and Souhegan High School Nurse Sherisse Salter will focus on lessons learned while navigating the restrictions of COVID including remote learning, other experiences at SHS that prepare students for the next step, and how their professional perspectives on teens may have changed. They will also have an opportunity to let the community know about the current high school experience at Souhegan High School and include suggestions on how parents and other family members may support all young high school students.

AAUW’s mission is to advance gender equity for women and girls through research, education, and advocacy with a vision of equity for all.

In working toward these goals, the Southern New Hampshire Branch provides scholarships for young women who are pursuing college degrees with the intent to follow STEM careers after graduation. Last year’s recipients were two young women who graduated in June from Souhegan High School. In addition, the branch hosts the Annual Candidates Night in late February/early March giving voters in Amherst a chance to hear the positions of candidates running for town and school offices. The branch does not endorse any particular candidate or party. It also hosts a book discussion group and plans social gatherings.

The organization whose roots date back to the 1880s has two branches in NH. The Southern New Hampshire Branch was established in the 1970s. Current members live in the following communities: Amherst, Dover, Exeter, Hanover, Hollis, Manchester, Merrimack, Milford, Mont Vernon, Nashua, Wilton, and Wolfeboro.

Sheelu Joshi Flegal, MSW, LICSW, has 30 years of experience working with youth and families in the community.  She joined the Souhegan High School staff as the high school’s social worker in 2013. She has Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from UNH and a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Boston University. Sheelu spent the beginning of her career working in residential treatment where she was the director of residential care for 15 years. Sheelu is a fierce advocate for mental health and wellness, and uses any opportunity she can to promote open and honest communication regarding this topic.

Sherisse Salter joined the staff at Souhegan High School as the school nurse in September of 2021 after a year working at an area elementary school.  Prior to that she worked 16 years as an emergency room nurse with a specialty in pediatrics.  She currently is pursuing a Master’s of Public Health at Southern New Hampshire University.  She lives in Goffstown with her family and an assortment of farm animals including a pot bellied pig named Waffles. In her spare time Sherisse is training for her second marathon, the Chicago Marathon, in October of this year.
